Connection that fails

The phone is the dream vocabulary’s principal image for contact at a distance, and it appears in dreams overwhelmingly in the mode of failure. Working phones do not generate memorable dreams. Phones that will not dial, calls that will not connect, batteries that die mid-conversation, numbers that cannot be remembered, and voices that cannot be heard — these are the reported scenarios, and they concern communication that is not reaching its destination.
